University funding released to community projects

Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é has released its latest round of funding to help projects in the Charnwood community.

Donations were made from the Inside Out fund and a total of £5000 was awarded. The funding is dedicated to supporting members of staff at the University involved in community projects.

This year 12 applications were successful:

Ashmount School To buy an iPad2 plus software to help special needs pupils at the school communicate effectively
Fearon Community Association To fund production of an animated documentary film about Fearon Hall and Fearon Community Association
Friends of Normanton on Soar Primary School To buy books to furnish the library
Intandem To equip tandem cycle with power assistance
Leicestershire and Rutland Beekeepers Association To purchase new equipment to sustain two training apiaries on campus
Leicestershire Dyslexia Association To help fund an adventure weekend and course for dyslexia training
Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é Greenfields Tennis Club To pay tennis coaches to run free taster sessions for reception classes
Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é Rugby Football Club To buy equipment for the squad for use in the winter months
Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é Sea Cadets Purchase of Open canoe
Refuel To buy Kasbah to create quiet cosy area where adults and children can interact
Shree Ram Krishna Community Project To buy lap top computer and CD player for pre school

Since the Community Donations Fund was established 50 members of staff have been awarded grants, rewarding the many hours of volunteering that take place out of normal working hours.

Also awarded was the Strategic Fund which supports community activities in priority areas locally. It is allocated in association with partner agencies such as Charnwood Borough Council and John Storer Charnwood.  £10,000 is awarded annually from this fund.

This year the chosen projects are:

Marios Tinenti Centre To provide for volunteer training and team building, computer software, community events and general materials for the centre.
Ashby Road Estate Community Association To support the refurbishment of the community centre (provision of DDA compliant disabled toilet facilities) and purchase of equipment including new photocopier, tables and office furniture
Shelthorpe Community Association To fund a feasibility study to assess the need for a community facility
Warwick Way Action Group Development workshops for young people, community art project, community events and support for detached youth workers
Thorpe Acre Residents Association To fund a feasibility study to assess the need for a community facility

The University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Robert Allison, presented the cheques at a ceremony held at the University last week.

The Community Donations Fund will be in operation again for the academic year 2013/2014 and details of the funds and the deadlines for submission of bids will be available here: in due course.
